After reading Dare I was saddened to be done with the book but then I discovered Deny. Deny picks up right where Dare ended. Leith is figuring out how to help the Resistance while trying not to get Martyn killed. Leith was able to save Renna from a Blade and in doing that he became the First Blade. The only Blade who has not failed the King. The way that Leith has changed in this book resembles the change that happens when we accept the Lord into our hearts. We pour all of our extra time into wanting to get to know the Lord and learning how to put out trust in him.

In Deny, we start to see Renna learn to trust Leith despite the fact of what he has done to her in the past. Leith shows Renna what it is like to have courage, but he also shows her what it’s like to go through trials that out her faith and life on the line. The two are encouraged by the other to become someone that they never thought that they would become. The way that the two grow together helps to strengthen them for anything that is to come. After reading this book I was left with these quotes that encompassed my thoughts before I began the next book.

“There’s a lot of darkness and pain in this life, and we don’t always understand why things happen. But that’s where trust comes in. We have to trust that God can see the full landscape better than we can.”

“The Daniel stories in the Bible wouldn’t be miracles if Daniel wasn’t thrown into the lions’ den and his friends weren’t thrown into the furnace. As much as we might not like it, we can’t skip the lions’ den part to get to the happy part.”

“He pulled back and traced his finger along the throbbing line left by his knife. His touch sent a new sort of throbbing into her chest. His eyes had shed their hard look and now shone a bright green. “I’m so sorry. For this. For not protecting you. For not saving your aunt and uncle.”
