Shannon Dittemore

Winter, White and Wicked

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Twice-orphaned Sylvi has chipped out a niche for herself on Layce, an island cursed by eternal winter. Alone in her truck, she takes comfort in two things: the solitude of the roads and the favor of Winter, an icy spirit who has protected her since she was a child.

Sylvi likes the road, where no one asks who her parents were or what she thinks of the rebels in the north. But when her best friend, Lenore, runs off with the rebels, Sylvi must make a haul too late in the season for a smuggler she wouldn’t normally work with, the infamous Mars Dresden. Alongside his team—Hyla, a giant warrior woman, and Kyn, a boy with skin like stone—Sylvi will do whatever it takes to save her friend.

But when the time comes, she’ll have to choose: safety, anonymity, and the favor of Winter—or the future of the island that she calls home.

Receiving this book was a huge surprise to me. I had requested to review Winter, White, and Wicked but I never heard back. I was beginning to think that my dreams of reading this book had been destroyed, but then a package arrived at my door. Now since I have started reviewing books this package at my door is has somewhat become a new thing. What I did not know was which of the books had arrived. When I opened this book I was surprised to see the beautiful cover of Dittmore’s book.

While I enjoyed thoroughly enjoyed certain parts of this book, it was hard to overcome the languages in this book. I tend to not like any cuss words in my books because I feel as though they are not necessary. They especially are not necessary for a young adult book. I feel that allowing them in a book normalizes the use of cuss words. It also makes it hard to recommend a book that I loved to read to my friends and younger cousins who have a passion for reading. If these words would have been taken out then

I loved the characterization of Winter. Not many people choose to take a season and choose to turn it into their own character. They do not do this because of the fact that is a challenge to do so without ruining what winter is. Dittemore was able to not only able to do this, but she also made you fall in love with Winter. It was so amazing how Dittemore was able to take a season and turn it into its own unique character.

I enjoyed all of the flashbacks that helped to create depth to this story and to Sylvi. I feel like the flashbacks helped us to understand what had happened to Sylvi and turn her into the character we read about. These flashbacks also helped you connect to Sylvi in ways that without them she would not be the same character we know her as.

I think my favorite part of this book has to be the cover. I love the fact that you are able to turn it and you see the different looks that Sylvi has. I also enjoyed the fact that this book is a hardcover! I love that!

I received this book in exchanged of my honest review.
